LECTURE 12: TYPES OF TESTS

What is a Test?

A test is a procedure used to assess the quality, performance, or reliability of something, such as evaluating the effectiveness of teaching and learning. There are various types of tests designed for different purposes.

Diagnostic Test

Diagnostic tests are designed to identify students’ weaknesses in specific subject areas or skills. Teachers often use diagnostic tests for reading and math to pinpoint areas needing improvement and to provide targeted remedial instruction.

Standardized Tests

A standardized test is a type of test that:

  1. Requires all test takers to respond to the same set of questions from a common question bank.
  2. Is scored in a consistent manner, allowing for comparisons of performance across individuals.

Achievement Test

An achievement test evaluates a student’s skill and knowledge acquired at a particular grade or level, typically through structured instruction like training or classroom teaching. It assesses achievement against specific objectives.

Proficiency Test

A proficiency test measures a learner’s level of language ability. Unlike achievement tests, which assess proficiency in specific skills, proficiency tests evaluate overall language competence.

Psychometric Test

A psychometric test is an objective and standardized tool used to measure specific behavioral traits or cognitive abilities. It provides quantifiable data on psychological characteristics.
